Good news for those who’ve been eyeing The Forever Winter but hesitating to jump into its early access release: the developers at FUN DOG have just dropped a demo on Steam. It’s an unusual move for an early access game, but a welcome one. With many players (myself included) on the fence, unsure whether to commit to an in-development title with the inevitable bugs and incomplete features, this demo gives a solid taste of what’s in store—and it’s a taste well worth savoring.

I’ve been cautious about diving in, wanting to experience The Forever Winter in a more polished, bug-free state. But I’m glad I gave the demo a try, despite the few bugs that popped up. One of the more noticeable issues was when objective enemies despawned after we took them down, preventing us from collecting the necessary items. Despite minor issues like this, the demo provided a raw, immersive experience that kept me glued to the screen and wanting more.

An Atmosphere Straight Out of the PS2 Era

From the start, The Forever Winter feels like a journey back in time to the with is interface style and somewhat clunky movement system reminiscent of PS2-era games. The environments are bleak and foreboding, radiating a sense of impending danger that doesn’t let up. As I explored the dusty, desolate world, I was hit by a wave of nostalgia—which is weird, given that survival games didn’t really exist back then, but hey, I think you’ll get what I mean.

And this atmosphere is no passive experience. I found myself caught between multiple firefights between hostile factions, each encounter escalating the tension as I struggled to survive with limited resources. At one point, I barely escaped a mysterious, formidable enemy that sent me sprawling. The stakes remained high as I slipped through an abandoned military base, heart pounding as enemy drones patrolled overhead, leaving no room for error.

The Oppressive, Gritty Tone of a True Survival Game

The Forever Winter stands out as one of the most intense and oppressive survival games I’ve experienced. It’s a game that demands attention to detail, planning, and nerve. Every encounter feels like a fight for survival, and the game pulls no punches in reminding you of the stakes. The demo introduces you to a world where danger is constant and death is a close companion—qualities that true fans of the survival genre will appreciate.

This raw, gritty experience is exactly what FUN DOG seems to be aiming for. It’s a testament to their commitment to providing players with a survival experience that feels both nostalgic and fresh. Despite the occasional bug, The Forever Winter delivers a taste of what’s to come: a fully realized, hauntingly atmospheric world where players are tested at every turn.

Should You Check Out the Demo?

Absolutely.

If you’ve been on the fence about The Forever Winter, this demo might just be what finally knocks you over. FUN DOG has taken a commendable step by giving players an honest preview of the game’s potential and challenges.

Do yourself a favor: jump into the demo, feel the intense atmosphere for yourself, and experience a world where your survival instinct is your best friend. Let that fence you’ve been on get smashed by a massive mech or a zombie cyborg—you’ll be glad you took the plunge.
